Our idea: We’ve developed an App that teaches young children to count from 1 to 9.

Strong educational foundations are necessary for academic success and young age is obviously the time when kids build them.

Despite their best efforts, many families often lack the time to do that teaching themselves. Some may believe that their kids can count when in fact it’s not the case, which can lead to problems later at school as the basics of counting are not always known.

Our app provides teaching that was until now reserved for kids in top private schools (the app has been designed by pre-k teachers in such schools). We make this accessible to all. We’ve kept the price low ($1.99) so as many families as possible can download it.

We believe that mobile devices, although still expensive today, are a great opportunity to help underprivileged kids learn well and fast. We want to play a role, through our apps, in that effort.

The app features beautiful animations and music, an engrossing interactive pirate story and artificial intelligence that increases the activities’ difficulty based on the child’s performance and understanding. Parents also can monitor their child’s progress within the app.

We’ve made sure the App worked on iPod Touch (from Gen. 3), the mobile device with the highest penetration rate in low resources families (ie. no need to have an iphone, although the app works as well on iphone and ipad).

I (Nick) am the project manager. I’ve worked with a team of preschool teachers when designing the app. The company behind the app, Bambino Avenue, is an independent company, which I self-funded.  I would also like to design additional mini-games in the app, and mini-games for other grades (kindergarten, grade 1).
